From September 8 to 11, 2026, Brno hosted EuroCarto 2026, the European Conference on Cartography and GIS. Organized by the Czech Cartographic Society under the patronage of the International Cartographic Association, with our Department of Geoinformatics among the co-organizers, the conference brought together more than 260 participants under the motto “Let’s transform cartography together”.
Stanislav Popelka, head of the lab, presented field research with eye-tracking glasses comparing map use on a mobile phone and on paper during orientation in real-world environments. He also presented the work of Barbora Jančová on how users read colour scales on maps with a dark background.
Michaela Vojtěchovská, Ph.D. student, introduced GazeDeck, an application that brings mobile eye-tracking glasses to arbitrary cartographic surfaces, from screens to printed maps, enabling gaze-based interaction and gaze sharing between multiple users.

Tomáš Vaníček, who has just successfully completed his Ph.D., presented the framework and main findings of his dissertation on evaluating the usability of interactive maps with eye-tracking and complementary methods such as interaction logging and think-aloud protocols.
Markéta Beitlová, working primarily at Charles University in Prague in collaboration with our lab, presented a study comparing the use of paper and digital atlases, combining eye-tracking with records of user interaction.
